MODIS Hotspots KML

FIRMS is now offering experimental Keyhole Markup Language (KML), version 2.0, to view MODIS Hotspot detections for the past 24 hours (UTC) using Google™ Earth. We welcome your comments and suggestions for improving our offering of KML.

To read more on KML, please see this page from Google™ Earth. If you do not have Google™ Earth, you can download it here for free.

Auto-Updating KML for Global MODIS Hotspots NEW!

FIRMS now offers an auto-updating KML (using KML NetworkLinks) to visualize the latest MODIS Hotspot detections for most parts of the globe on Google™ Earth. The KML file will automatically refresh every two hours and downloads the latest available MODIS Hotspot detections. Alternatively, you can refresh the KML from within Google™ Earth.

KML for Global Regions

KML for active MODIS fire detections is also available for the following regions. We are planning to include more areas in the near future.

Available Regions

. Northern_Africa
. Southern_Africa
. South_Asia
. South_East_Asia
. Russia
. Australia
. Europe
. Canada
. Continental_USA
. South_America
. Central_America

To download the KML files, simply click on a region below. A download box will appear, with options to open or save the KML. If you have Google™ Earth installed, you can open it directly and view the fires on Google™ Earth. Otherwise, you can save it to your local disk for later viewing.

To view a downloaded KML file in Google™ Earth at any time, double click on the KML file on your local disk. It will automatically open in Google™ Earth.

Note: The KML files are updated every four hours, starting 1:00 A.M. Eastern Time (USA).
